All three areas in this unit are compulsory.
Section A – Geographical Skills
This section focuses on skills linked to responding to stimulus material. Students will be expected to respond to questions based on an OS map of 1:50000 scale and a key of conventional signs will be provided. Other stimulus material might be diagrams, maps, photographs or graphs.
Questions may be either human or physical, and will be based on the skills section of the specification.
Section B – Challenges for the Planet
This section comprises two topics – The causes, effects and responses to climate change and Sustainable development for the planet. Students will be asked to demonstrate knowledge, understanding, skills and the ability to apply these through a series of carefully structured questions. There are no specified case studies, so you have a free choice of examples to use.

Controlled assessment
You should be able to continue using your present fieldwork with very little adaptation year
to year. Although the Edexcel-set tasks will change each year, the eight themes will remain the
same. This allows you to be consistent with the theme chosen or to be more dynamic in your
approach to assessment.
